The Tonewheels Bio:

The Tonewheels (featuring Matt Weidinger, Chris Latta and Mike Rajna) are an organ trio based out of Kitchener, Ontario. Blending the styles of the classic Jimmy Smith/Jack McDuff blues/ jazz trios with beloved power trios such as Cream/Traffic they have stumbled upon a unique sound that allows them to carry on the classic traditions of improvised music.

Matt Weidinger (organ/vocals) has been working as a full time musician since the age of 16 having well surpassed his ten thousand hours in the trade. Starting off playing locally around his hometown of Kitchener, Matt has worked his way up to being one of the most sought after and well known entertainers in Ontario.

“ Refered to in print as an “unsung local guitar hero”, Chris Latta has quietly built a career as an in demand sideman in support of many of Southern Ontario’s premiere blues and rock bands over the past 2 decades. Latta has been seen performing on stages across Canada, the US and Europe as a member of Soulstack, The Douglas Watson R&B Revue, The Dylan Wickens Band and many others.

Mike Rajna (drums/vocals) has been playing for over 20 years. After completing a diploma from Mohawk’s Music program, and a degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Toronto, he moved back to Kitchener-Waterloo. Mike continues to play in a wide variety of musical projects, in a multitude of genres, across Ontario.

FESTIVALS/GIGS 2023 Kitchener Blues Festival Lighthouse Blues Festival Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Blues Festival Goderich Blues Festival Etwell Concert Series Niagara Jazz Festival - Hungry for Hammond Series RESIDENCIES 2023 Cameron House (Toronto) London Brewing Co-Op (London) Sold out hometown show - Jazz Room (Waterloo) “The TD Kitchener Blues Festival prides itself in presenting the finest Blues & Roots musicians currently touring. For our 2023 Festival, we included The Tonewheels in our lineup. They are a Hammond B3-based organ trio with an eclectic mixture of material, that is expertly presented by Matt Weidinger, along with drummer Mike Rajna and guitarist Chris Latta. Individually they are amongst the most talented musicians in Ontario, and collectively they deliver a riveting performance that is not to be missed. We’re confident that audiences everywhere will find them as exciting as ours in Kitchener did this year.” Rob Barkshire, President, Kitchener Blues Festival “Matt Weidinger and the Tonewheels delivered an inspiring performance this summer at our outdoor concert series (as they done multiple times in the past). Obviously he is an avid student of music way beyond his years. Matt’s trio perfectly showcases his mastery of the Hammond organ and stacked Leslies. What sets Matt apart from most acts is his powerful and deeply soulful voice. He can capture the essence of the vocals from Stevie Winwood, Ray Charles to Frank Sinatra. Every time he plays, I am blown away.” Bill Spring, Etwell Concert Series

Brandon Santini’s Bio:

There are many different opinions as to what the future of the blues harmonica will be. International touring vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini is undeniably a worthy player to keep an eye on as the latest surge of young blues artists leave their footprint in blues history. His name is worthy of conversations that include James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Dennis Gruenling, Charlie Musselwhite and other frontline harmonica players by combining his love and respect for traditional blues with a present, colorful style of playing that is often compared to James Cotton or Paul Butterfield. Raised in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Santini purchased his first harmonica in 1997 at the age of fifteen when his mother took him to the local music store upon his request. He founded the Blues Music Award nominated band Delta Highway in 2003 and relocated to Memphis where he absorbed the sounds and culture of the Delta and North Mississippi Hill Country, honing his craft night after night, sweating it out in local Beale Street clubs just like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King did decades before him. Now playing over 100 shows per year throughout the world, Santini has garnered five Blues Music Award nominations, festival headlining slots and even performing on stage with the likes of Buddy Guy and Gary Clark, Jr.

Brandon Santini’s latest release, The Longshot, from the American Showplace Music label takes listeners on a slight detour from the traditional blues highway he has logged many miles on. One may not be surprised that the 36 year old vocalist and harmonica player is influenced and inspired by legendary rock artists such as The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Allman Brothers Band and Creedence Clearwater Revival just as much as Little Walter, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. From the ferocious opener, “Don’t Come Around Here” to the embattled acoustic American driven, “Broken Bones,” Santini ties his blues and rock influences together to deliver an energetic album of introspective heartbreak and lament.

David Nicoloff - Lead Guitar/ Vocals

David started his musical endeavors as a teenager in Burlington Ontario starting a band called The Shock Rockets with some friends. During this time, the resurgence of rockabilly was emerging through the punk rock scene. In the mid 70’s and early 80’s bands like The Ramones, Teenage Head, Robert Gordon and The Stray Cats became a strong influence on The Shock Rockets and David’s love of punk rock and rockabilly music. Moving ahead a few decades, David’s same love of rockabilly music brought out the desire to form the Hell Bent Rockers with Billy T in 2011. For more than 10 years The Hell Bent Rockers continue to perform regularly across parts of Canada and the USA.

Billy T - Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar

Billy T was born listening to Elvis as his mother was a big fan! Coming of age in the 80’s, he had many musical influences but it was the resurgence of rockabilly with bands like The Shakin’ Pyramids, The Blasters, and The Stray Cats that his real passion for early rock and roll took shape. In the late 80’s Billy joined the Crawl Daddy’s, a rockabilly quartet from Hamilton looking for a front man. Playing traditional early 50’s rockabilly from artists like Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and The Johnny Burnette Trio, Billy knew this was the music he wanted to play! With a move to Toronto in 1989, Billy soon hooked up with local guitar player Kevin McQuade and they formed The Rattlin’ Bones. Hoppin’ and a Boppin’ through the local Toronto club scene as well as a rockabilly matinee Saturday afternoon jam at the El Mocambo, the Rattlin’Bones gave Billy the opportunity to continue to play the music he loved! Fast forward through the years to 2011 when living in Burlington and raising a family, Billy spots ad on Kijiji from a Hamilton rockabilly band looking for a singer. This was the start of the Hell Bent Rockers and over 10 years later and hundreds of shows in Canada and the US, Billy is still hoppin’ and a boppin’ playing that good ole high energy rockabilly!!

"Lucky" Pete Lambert - Drums

“Lucky” Pete Lambert has been a professional musician since 1979 when he joined the pioneering Punk band NFG, playing drums in his hometown of London, Ontario. In 1982, he moved to London, England and joined the notorious Punk band, Angelic Upstarts. For the next 12 years, he played in many different bands there, including the Ska bands the Trojans, Bad Manners and the legendary Rico Rodriguez. Lambert has toured all over Europe and Japan extensively and throughout Canada and the US as well. Moving back to Canada in 1994, he mostly has been playing with roots rocking band the Kensington Hillbillys and it’s sister band, the Parkdale Rebels. Now in his 21st year with the ‘Billys. Lambert resides in Hamilton where he now plays with the Hellbent Rockers and it’s sister band, the Trebletones. You’ll often find him DJing around town occasionally as well. Vinyl Rules!

Les Graham - Upright Bass

Les Graham hails from Haydon Ontario but made his way to Hamilton in 2017.  He has been playing bass since he was 14, but learned to play the upright just over a decade ago.  Playing slap bass is his passion.  His love of rockabilly comes from growing up in the backseat of a Studebaker going to car shows as a kid.    Les plays in several bands with styles from Blues to Zydeco.  When he is not playing gigs he can be found recording local bands in his studio.

Bio:

From slick hot-rod rockabilly to smooth crooning honky tonk, Nicholas Campbell is the real deal. Inspired by some of the last century’s most iconic country sounds, from Faron Young to Brian Setzer, Campbell first picked up the guitar at age 10 and was gigging by 11. Having found a fresh start during the pandemic, Nicholas began playing consistently with his band, The Two Meter Cheaters, who quickly rediscovered their groove as live shows began to become an option once again—and they wasted no time in seizing the opportunity.

The band worked to release Campbell’s debut album, Livin’ and Other Western Ideas in 2021, combining elements of rockabilly, western swing, and good old-fashioned honky tonk. The result was a brisk, invigorating album that feels as fresh as it does familiar. The band has enjoyed worldwide coverage and airplay since, spanning from Western Canada to Spain, to Italy, and beyond. As live music has begun to blossom again Nicholas has had the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Melissa Payne, Paul Reddick, Blue Rodeo and plenty of other artists. With Campbell’s new singles and the album to come, Gonna Have A Ball Tonight, the group has shifted their tone to include a more rock n’ roll-centric sound, adding a renewed breath of energy and excitement to Campbell’s signature country sensibilities.

Little Magic Sam Bio:

When the world gets down on Little Magic Sam, he gets down on a Les Paul. Hailing from St.Thomas, ON, Sam Taylor is a born entertainer with a penchant for raw blues and soul music and lyrics that bely someone much older than his 31 years. With an enormous stage presence, it comes as no surprise that this multi-talented singer/songwriter has been performing internationally since the age of 7.

After graduating from Fanshawe College with a diploma in Music Industry Arts, Sam headed into EMAC Studios with producer Moe Berg (of Pursuit of Happiness) on two original songs; Thought of Leaving and Loaded Gun, both of which received airplay across Southern Ontario. Loaded Gun has also been featured in the tv shows Haven, Cracked, and Degrassi. Sam’s versatile and honest songwriting gives his music the emotional edge that sets him apart as a talented up and comer. He has shared the stage with Chuck Leavell (The Rolling Stones), Gordon Lightfoot, and Whitehorse in Canada as well as with Chicago blues legends Linsey Alexander, Claudette Miller and Mary Lane.

Little Magic Sam was thrilled to get the opportunity to record what would become his debut E.P. at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. "Memphis Midnight Sun" was released in 2019 and was also produced by Moe Berg.

In May 2023, the Little Magic Sam Band released a new six song E.P. of original Chicago blues called, "Step Back". This album was recorded to mono tape at Jimmy Bowskill (The Sheepdogs, Blue Rodeo)'s Ganaraska Recording Co. using only vintage and antique equipment and mixed by blues maestro Steve Marriner. "Step Back" is available now on 180 gram translucent blue vinyl and CD.

In February 2024, the Little Magic Sam Band was honoured to have won the Maple Blues Award for "New Artist or Group of the Year" and would like to thank everyone who took the time to cast their vote in support of the band.

Lowdown Dirty Mojos Bio:

The Blues and the South… Well let me tell you something. We’re from the south… Southern Ontario. You may chuckle about that but Southern Ontario has a long rich history when it comes to Blues, R’n’B and Roots. Ronnie Hawkins and Levon Helm both moved here from the southern US and found success. Since then many Artists & Bands from here have developed their skills and have prospered. Here’s a short but powerful list: The Band, Crowbar,

King Biscuit Boy, Downchild, Paul James & Jack de Keyzer.

LOWDOWN DIRTY MOJOS play their own brand of uniquely original 60’s influenced R’n’B and Blues, through the skillful songwriting of Paul Wootton & Paul and Stephen Foster.

Here’s how it Happened

During a break at a recording session in 2018, Paul Wootton and Stephen Foster were watching music videos, when a 1966 video of Muddy Waters and his band playing Got My Mojo Workin’ came on. A lightbulb went off and they realized that that was what they should be doing… So with Stephen Foster engineering they set about recording their 1st. album Screamin’ Hoodoo R’n’B and LOWDOWN DIRTY MOJOS was born. They used 16 different Hamilton musicians including players from King Biscuit Boy, Junkhouse, Simply Saucer and The Shakers to complete the album which was released on Vinyl & CD in 2019. A full band was formed and honed their sound in numerous clubs in Hamilton and a variety of local festivals.

COVID curbed the bands ability to play live so they set about recording their 2nd album. Stone Cold Groovers was released in 2021 on CD and all digital platforms and the band was nominated and WON! a Maple Blues Award,

New Artist of the Year. Again affected by COVID it was not awarded until 2022. They received major blues radio airplay for Stone Cold Groovers across the nation, conducting interviews on major radio shows like Holger Petersens CBC Saturday Night Blues, BluesSource with Ken Wallis and At The Crossroads Blues Radio with Brant Zwicker.

The Mojos have been busy playing live shows at clubs and festivals including Hamiltons It’s Your Festival, Dundas Cactus Festival, London Ribfest, The Ancaster Fair & Grand River Arts Festival.

LOWDOWN DIRTY MOJOS have just released their 3rd album Down’n’Dirty on CD and all digital platforms, currently receiving lots of radio airplay across Canada and Internationally too. They’re also currently expanding live shows into the Niagara, Kitchener & Toronto markets and are hoping to embark on a short tour of British Columbia and western Canada later this year.
